OHMs Peak: Gestalt is a comforting album with an uplifting heaviness and psychedelic vibe. Could you give us a brief glimpse into your creative process and what went into bringing this album to life?

Plaindrifter: Gestalt came together very organically for us, but it took some time due to various events in our private lives. Since our last album, Echo Therapy, we met in the rehearsal room as regularly as possible and worked on new ideas. These usually start with riffs by Nils and are then developed collectively. Everyone brings their individual strengths to the process.

We absolutely did not want to repeat ourselves, which is why we experimented with new elements such as keys and guest vocalists. We deliberately challenged ourselves with new approaches to songwriting while at the same time trying to remain true to our sound.

OHMs Peak: As musicians, what influences does each band member bring to the table?

Plaindrifter: The craftsmanship throughout this album is flawless, how do those individual influences come together to create your sound?

To answer this question, we should mention that we have grown musically together as a band. We have known each other as friends since school and have been making music together for a very long time. Along the way, we have also shared two decades of going to concerts together.

All three of us were musically raised on metal, above all the classic thrash metal of the Ruhr Area, with bands like Sodom and Kreator. Over the years, this evolved through the Gothenburg-style melodic death metal of the ’90s towards more technical and progressive influences, such as Opeth.

When it comes to stoner, we are all big fans of bands like Elder, King Buffalo, Khan, Weedpecker and many others today. That interest grew out of our fascination with the genre, which started years ago with bands like Truckfighters, Down and Kyuss.

OHMs Peak: It’s nearly impossible to choose a standout track, but “Eternal Season” has it all. We love how the song transitions between stoner rock, progressive elements, and even touches of shoegaze. Can you take us behind the creation of this magnificent song?

Plaindrifter: As is often the case, the song started with a riff by Nils that he eventually brought into the rehearsal room. It is the riff from the very beginning of the song.

We like contrasts and strive to break the listener’s expectations. That’s why we decided to follow the opening with the extended, drawn-out section and then move into the staccato-style riffing.

The climax of the song comes at the very end, where we completely open everything up and give the song plenty of space to fully unfold. As with all of our songs, we want to invite the listener to completely lose themselves in the music.

OHMs Peak: If you could tour with any band outside of the stoner rock genre, who would you choose as the perfect complement to your sound?

Plaindrifter: As mentioned, we are particularly shaped by metal influences. Since we also like contrasts, a band with a really heavy sound would be a great fit. Our quieter passages and more dreamy sections could provide a fitting counterpoint.

I’ll just throw out the name Nevermore, as the band has been a long-standing favorite of all three of us.

OHMs Peak: The album artwork is amazing and looks even better on vinyl. Who is the artist behind the artwork, and is there a connection between the imagery and the music or themes of Gestalt?

Plaindrifter: Artwork: The artwork was designed by our bassist André, just as he did for Echo Therapy.

For the sake of full transparency, we should also mention that, alongside many hours of hands-on work, we deliberately used AI as part of the process. While we are aware that this aspect understandably rubs some people the wrong way, we would make the same decision for Gestalt again. Here’s why:

Gestalt is very deliberately a product of its time. It is a patchwork, a golem, a mosaic. It symbolizes the union of opposing elements, from which something greater emerges than the sum of its individual parts. For us, a touch of machine-generated chaos fits this theme alongside our own drawings, brushstrokes, photographic source material and human editing.

Explaining your own art is pretty lame, so we’ll leave it at that. Suffice it to say: anyone willing to take the time to read the lyrics will find the motif described above running through them as a common thread.

We should also mention that we fundamentally share the skepticism surrounding AI in art. In the end, André found the process of working with it quite frustrating. While we are happy with the result because we were able to realize our own vision, we had already decided during the process that we would exclude the use of AI from future projects.

Naturally, everything you can hear, the songwriting, the lyrics, and, by the way, our merch are 100% handmade.
