Dive deeper into Choosing To Die with our Q&A with Kulk.

OHMs Peak: As a duo, your sound is massive, intense, and chaotic. Can you give us a glimpse into your songwriting process and how this gem came together?

Kulk: Under lots of stress! We booked the studio before we had written anything; as the session began getting closer, we worked more and more frantically to get it done. I think this ended up contributing to the urgency we wanted the record to have.

OHMs Peak: We hear hints of ’90s sludge, with influences reminiscent of Fudge Tunnel and early Cavity, while still maintaining your own distinct style. What influences does each member bring to the table?

Kulk: We are both students in the school of the Melvins! There's no single greater influence on us than the Melvins aha

OHMs Peak: The track “The Saddest Holiday” absolutely floored us. We love the contrast between both vocalists and how it adds another dimension to the song. Would you consider exploring more of this vocal interplay on future releases?

Kulk: It would really depend on what record we were making next. I think what makes ' The Saddest Holiday' work is that it sits late in the record, and by the time you reach it, you've been devastated by noise for a while. Having Jade's vocals at the end was a way of still surprising people and getting them to let their guard down for the final blow.

OHMs Peak: If you could tour with any band outside the doom/sludge genre, who would it be, and why do you think they would complement Kulk’s sound?

Kulk: I think they probably come under noise rock, so I'll say Ken Mode. Their aggression and urgency on 'Loved' was the blueprint for the feeling we wanted from 'Choosing To Die'

OHMs Peak: The album artwork has an ominous atmosphere that really caught our attention. Is there any particular meaning behind the photograph? Also, who created the Kulk band logo? We love it!

Kulk: So, Jade took the photo on the cover, and I (Thom) drew our logo. The story behind the cover is pretty bleak. A day after the death of our friend, whom the record largely centres around, we took ourselves off to the Peak District to get away from everything and do some hiking. In the end, it was an awful time. It rained the whole time, and we couldn't stop sobbing (it's also the namesake for the saddest holiday). We stumbled on this rock structure, and Jade took a picture. When we got back, we forgot about the roll of film and 3 years later remembered when we were stuck for what would be the record cover.

OHMs Peak: Kulk is stranded on an island with only a solar powered turntable and majestic powered solar Bluetooth speakers. The band collectively can only choose one album. Which album do you agree to?

Kulk: It's got to be 'A Senile Animal' by The Melvins; we collectively listen to this record more than any other!
